april 18, world steel association (wsa) announced the new world champions of its 17th steelchallenge in austria and beating competitors from europe, america, west asia and east asia, mr.han penglong from hbis won the title of champion of industry category. this is the fifth champion hbis participants have won since 2017. hbis cpc and group chairman yu yong, wsa director and posco holdings ceo jeoong-woo choi, hbis vice president li yiren attended the ceremony.
wsa steelchallenge simulated steel making challenge is the world’s only professional competition in steel industry. in 2023, there are 1299 participants from 27 countries and regions joined the competition. on november 28, 2022, in the regional tournament of steelchallenge 17th, han penglong won the champion title in the industry category in north asia and the ticket of world final championship.
after three years of social distancing guidelines from health authorities around the world that prevented worldsteel from hosting the world championship in person, it was time to return to tradition and learning experience with a face-to-face sessions.the best players of the regional championship from the industry and student categories competed for the global title. the task was to produce a specific engineering steel grade at the lowest cost using steeluniversity’s electric arc furnace and secondary steelmaking courses in a combined simulation. to reflect the steel industry’s commitment to reducing the footprint from its operations, there were carbon footprint requirements for the steel grade. after intense competition, han penglong defeated competitors from regional champions and won the grand champion title.
hbis has been strengthening its working teams by building working competition schemes, skill competition, and employee innovation systems. the group launches position training, competition, master & student, communication & exchange programs to improve the working skill of its employees. hbis zhou wentao, tang xiaoyu, shi xiaowei, wang ruibin, pan penglong, has won world champion titles in wsa steelchallenge. with their excellent performances, hbis talents are showing the capabilities and skills of chinese steel industry.
